I work at a college, and while I am no longer a Norwich resident I have kept abreast of the changes that are being made within the district. I am ashamed of a school board that would allow such changes to the school day to accomodate a bus schedule with little or no other reason to do so. Seeing the "quality" of students that are entering college from across the state I can assure you that a fair number of these students, some of whom were on honor rolls, are ill prepared for the rigors of college education. Making the school day shorter and including excess downtime in the form of study halls is nothing if not a dis-service to students.

Is this 30 seconds? Sure sounds like it.Try attending a BOE meeting instead of mimicing the losers on 30 seconds that always whine about their school system. Does budget cuts = an intelligent decision?

Pat - my daughter is an 8th grader and is in the advanced placement classes. She was told on Wednesday by half of her teachers that there would probably not be homework. I remember having homework on most days in 8th grade. Someone told me that everyone gets a regents diploma now in the high school. Getting a regents diploma used to mean something and the colleges used to look at that. What does it mean now, when they have adjusted the pass/fail scores to accomodate the kids who shouldn't be taking regents?

Pat - just look at the test scores math and ela for Norwich and you would see this place is not interested in providing quality instruction. The no retention policy does not make students acountable for their work k-8 leaving the high school between a rock and a hard place since kids are not on grade level. When the kids can't complete the hard classes they are given easy ones. The class periods in Norwich (and UV according to friends over there) are way too short. If you read all the school reform info - longer classes and longer school days are what is recommended. This place ignores these recommendations and goes in reverse.
