Hey Chenango County, my first blog!

By Julian Kappel
Well, I am about halfway through my fourth week at The Evening Sun and I believe I’m starting to get the hang of it. Everyone has been amazing especially my fellow Evening Sun staff: Melissa, Brian, Melissa, Pat and, of course, my very patient editor Jeff.
It had been over a year since I wrote anything to the standards of a professional newspaper and I’ll admit it took a few tries to get back into the swing of things.
Since this is my first blog, I thought I’d give everyone a little bit of my background, interests and hobbies.
I was born in Chicago, IL but moved to the city of Norwich on my eleventh birthday in 1999. My mom always likes to joke that it must have been the greatest birthday present an eleven year old could ask for. “Happy Birthday honey! We’re tearing you away from everything and everyone you know and love and moving you 1200 miles away! Blow out the candles.”
As traumatic as it may seem, it was actually quite a pleasant change of scenery and after the expected period of “new kid” hazing, I settled quite comfortably into my new town.
I graduated from Norwich High School in 2006 with an advanced regents diploma and from there made my way back to the Midwest to attend Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO. I stayed in St. Charles for three years but decided it was not a good fit and moved, once again, back to New York in order to be closer to family.
Since that time I have been taking classes at SUNY Morrisville and working in town, with the exception of a stint as an ice-cream man in Binghamton (but that, I believe, is a blog for another day).
My interests include music, both listening and playing. I have played the guitar for 6 years and have been whistling for almost 2 (I finally learned and I’m just awful darn proud of myself). I also love reading, I have a couple of hundred books in my personal library, and I am something of a movie buff, or movie nerd, however you want to put it.
I absolutely love the outdoors and I try to go camping or hiking at least once every weekend. I also love writing, which is part of the reason why I am so excited about working at The Evening Sun.
If you have any questions for me my e-mail address is jkappel@evesun.com and I am always happy to hear comments.
