I used to recycle at home because I was told the county has "mandatory" recycling. We cleaned and separated all the glass, cardboard and plastic, put it in bins on the curb to be picked up. My regular trash was in clear plastic bags as I was told it should me.

The next morning, much to my surprise, the trashman picked up my cleaned and separated recyclables and threw them all in the back of the garbage truck along with my regular trash! There's no recycling done with them.

I notice other neighbors use brown trash bags and nobody else on my block separates their glass and plastic either. So much for mandatory recycling in Chenango County.

As an ex-Jersey guy, my problem with the recycling system here is they don't provide a way to recap your money if you recycle through your home pickup.

I recycle every week, just like I did prior to living here. I have no desire to head down to P&C or Price Chopper and stand in a line (that reeks of alcohol) to drop my bottles into a vending machine one at a time for a nickel.

I have no problem with the .05 deposit, but if it's really a deposit, you need to give me a convenient way to get my money back. If not, just call it what it is, another tax.
